Dealing with medical problems when you don’t have health insurance can be terrifying. Your choices for getting help are few, and even emergency care at a hospital may not turn out very well.

Jerry (name has been changed) came to our clinic because he was experiencing seizures and blackouts. He had lost his construction job as a result of these blackouts, and being uninsured, was having a hard time getting anyone to see him.

When Jerry arrived at the Clinic, our staff quickly connected him with the Nebraska Medical Center where he was diagnosed with blood flow blockage and swelling in the brain. Through medication and referrals, he quickly got the help he desperately needed.

Jerry is not alone in his inability to find adequate medical care. Did you know that over 40,000 people in Lancaster County have no health insurance? Last year our Free Clinic had almost 11,000 patient visits, and this year our numbers are projected to exceed 15,000. But the most surprising number is 91. That’s
the percentage of people visiting us who have no other connection to the Mission, either to our shelter or distribution center. They are simply people in our community living at 200% or less of the poverty line without health insurance.

We provide comprehensive health care to thousands of people in need, all without any charge to them or cost to taxpayers - all being done utilizing a volunteer medical staff. However, this clinic is not free for us. We have to spend a little over $250,000 a year operating it. And we really need your help. The Mission receives no government assistance, Medicare or Medicaid, insurance payments, or money from local funders. We depend completely on volunteers and contributions from folks like you. Would you consider helping us keep this important work going in Lincoln? It is literally saving lives in our city.

P.S. Please know the recent decision by the Supreme Court to uphold the Affordable Health Care Act will not impact our numbers at all. There are still many people who will not qualify for this program and others who do qualify but cannot find doctors to see them. We project increasing numbers of patients at our clinic for many years to come.
