The Prevention Center also makes clothing and shoes available to homeless guests staying at the Mission.
In 2008, the Mission distributed 596,049 pounds of food (bread, produce, fresh meat and canned goods); 436,107 articles of clothing; 10,609 pieces of furniture; and 460,233 household items. These efforts helped over 20,000 unduplicated Lancaster County residents. That's 10% of the Lincoln population!
Many of the people coming to the Prevention Center are living at or below the poverty line. They include people who are refugees, unemployed or under-employed, physically and mentally handicapped, struggling with affordable housing, and/or unable to earn a living wage. We estimate that 12 to 15% of our population is living in poverty.
