Homeless Prevention Center grand re-opening

Please join us for the grand re-opening of the People’s City Mission Homeless Prevention Center at our new address, 2615 O St.,on Thursday, August 9. The grand re-opening will include an open house from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and a ribbon cutting and dedication at 3:30 p.m. Parking will be available off of 26th & N St. For more information call 475-1303.

The Prevention Center makes items such as food, clothing, personal care needs, furniture, and household goods available at no charge to the poor and near homeless. In 2011, the Mission distributed 1,080,000 pounds of food (bread, produce, fresh meat, and canned goods); 436,107 articles of clothing; 10,609 pieces of furniture; and 460,233 household items. These efforts helped more than 20,000 unduplicated Lancaster County residents. That's 10 percent of the Lincoln population! Many of the people coming to the Prevention Center are living at or below the poverty line. They include people who are unemployed or under-employed, physically and mentally handicapped, refugees, those struggling with affordable housing, and those unable to earn a living wage. We estimate that 12 to 15 percent of our city's population is living in poverty.
