Mission’s City-Wide Recycling Day a HUGE Success; Thank You Lincoln!

The Mission’s newest program Mission Recycle kicks off to an amazing outpour of support; next event in the works

LINCOLN, NE, May 1, 2012 – The People’s City Mission held their first City Wide Recycling Day on Saturday, April 28th at all ten Russ’s Market and Super Saver locations across Lincoln to kick off our newest program, Mission Recycle. The Mission asked the public to bring any unwanted clothing & accessories including shoes, hats, purses, and belts in any condition, and donate them to a great cause. The result was an amazing outpouring of support from the community and over three semi trailers worth of clothing, shoes and household items collected in seven hours!

All clothing collected will now be sorted. The wearable clothing will be offered to guests staying at People’s City Mission as well as given out at our Homeless Prevention Center located at 21st and N Street beginning next week. The Homeless Prevention Center (HPC) provides an opportunity for those in the community living near or below the poverty line to acquire clothing, food, household goods, personal care items, and furniture at no cost for their homes. Clothing items that are no longer wearable or are not wanted by the HPC’s shoppers will be recycled.  All proceeds from recycled materials will come directly back in to the Homeless Prevention Center to sustain the outreach they provide to the impoverished of Lincoln.

Pastor Tom Barber said, “We never imagined that we would collect as much as we did last weekend. Lincoln has once again proven how overly generous it is to those in need.  In fact, we brought in so much over the weekend that we needed to close down the Homeless Prevention Center for a few days to be able to manage the amazing amount of items we received. We just didn’t have the space to bring people in to shop!  However, we will be on top of the situation shortly and will start distributing these donations to our guests soon. A BIG ‘thank you’ to all of Lincoln…this is going to bless so many.”

To be able to store the incoming donations the Mission has brought in additional outside storage. The staff at the HPC is currently working steadfastly to sort and straighten up the items collected. The Mission plans to be ready to distribute these items to the public starting Monday of next week at the latest.

Because the event was so successful, and the public feedback was so overwhelming, the Mission plans on holding another City Wide Recycling Day in the fall. The timing of that event is yet to be determined, but we would like to have it be near the changing of seasons to be able to collect seasonal clothes that people won’t want anymore. Tentatively the weekend after Labor Day weekend might work well for this next event, but the Mission will make that determination and announce a firm date soon.

The People’s City Mission would like to thank the citizens of Lincoln that supported the event, Super Saver and Russ’s Market, Raising Canes and Rent-A-Van for their help in making the event what it was.

Cornhusker Bank’s “One Day Without Shoes” Event for the People’s City Mission a Huge Success

On April 10th, Cornhusker Bank and People’s City Mission partnered to help raise awareness of the impact a need for a pair of shoes can have on a person’s life by hosting the One Day without Shoes event. Throughout that week the public was encouraged to bring in new shoes, their worn shoes that they no longer needed or cash donations to help put shoes on the less fortunate feet of Lincoln. By the end of the week, the six Lincoln Cornhusker Banks and over sixty other community partners had collected nearly 4,700 pairs of shoes and a raised donations totaling $9,000!

On, April 20th at 10am, the People’s City Mission and Cornhusker Bank will hold a press conference at the People’s City Mission to thank the public for the success of the event, present the Mission with a $9,000 check and then begin to distribute shoes to the residents of the homeless shelter. The local media is invited to attend this event.

Pastor Tom Barber, Executive Director of the People’s City Mission, commented, “This event is so impressive and we can’t thank Cornhusker Bank enough. This staggering amount of shoes and money they collected will help us put adequate footwear on thousands of deserving people. Thanks again to Cornhusker Bank for creating this event and thank you Lincoln for all of your generosity and kindness.”
