People's City Mission Needs YOU!
It's true! The volunteer network of People's City Mission is looking for someone with your interests, qualifications and motivation to serve. As a volunteer, you can communicate Christ's love and care in a special way, one that will deeply touch the hearts of the homeless and low-income. Of course, the needs are endless!

To meet these needs, People's City Mission depends upon God's abundant supply of caring people who have heard God's call. Whether you are young or old, male or female, employed or at home, a student, whatever you do, you can make a difference. People's City Mission needs you to be part of Lincoln's largest outreach to the homeless and impoverished.

Individual Volunteer Opportunities
Serve others by utilizing your talents and skills! If you have any professional experience or skills that you would like to offer the People’s City Mission, please fill out our Individual Volunteer Application and return it to our Volunteer Coordinator with a detailed description of your ideas. See you at the Mission!

Club E.D.E.F.Y. Jr.
Join Tami Thornton, our Child Care Director, in caring for infants and pre-school children in the morning. This is a great way for high school students to fulfill volunteer requirements during the summer. For more information, complete our Individual Volunteer Application and return it to our Volunteer Coordinator.

Ambassador
As an ambassador, you will spend some time learning about People’s City Mission, and then share that information with the public by giving tours and going out for speaking engagements. You can be an ambassador to your class, school, church, family, friends, workplace, or in your community. This position is for those volunteers who are already familiar with the Mission or are willing to spend several months visiting and learning about the Mission.

Coffee Shop
This position is located in the Agape Café, the coffee shop and common area in the Curtis Center, which is our recently constructed transitional housing facility for men. Responsibilities include serving coffee and laundry supplies from a designated area in the Agape Café; however, the majority of your time will be spent building relationships with our male guests.

Coming soon: a coffee shop volunteer position for women residing in the family shelter.

Drivers
the Mission has two different driver opportunities:

Transport Mission Guests: This is a great opportunity to provide our guests with a much needed service, especially in the evenings and during the winter season. As a volunteer driver, you will be responsible for transporting guests to and from the Mission. Shifts are available daily from 5:00 -7:00 pm and 7:00 - 10:00 pm. We will provide the vehicle, gas and cell phone during your shift.

Truck Driver: Your job will be to drive to various locations and pick up donated furniture and other items; you should be pretty hefty for this job. Shifts are available Sunday through Saturday.

Club E.D.E.F.Y. (our children's program)
This volunteer aids the E.D.E.F.Y. Director between the hours of 6:00 -8:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with coordinating, organizing, and supervising our after school-care program for children ranging from 6 to 18 years of age. You must pass a background check and be available for at least one shift per week for a minimum of two months.

Guest Advocate
The guest advocate works in the Agape Café, the coffee shop located in the Curtis Center. This position will primarily advocate for guests in areas like medical assistance, housing assistance and the job application process. Some experience in human services, vocational training and counseling preferred.

Instructor/Facilitator
This position is available for those who enjoy teaching. You will instruct or facilitate a class once a week for either our men or family shelter. Classes could cover any variety of topics from Community Involvement to Job Skills to Living for Christ. We require our guests to attend various life skills classes in order to enrich them while they stay with us. This volunteer will devote an hour to teaching assigned or developed curriculum every week. Individuals may also choose to tutor guests within a small group or one-on-one basis. Shift availability varies.

Interior Decorator/Painter
In this position, you will use a given budget to locate and purchase paints and supplies from EcoStores after viewing and assessing the rooms that need to be painted. If needed, you will also gather additional volunteers to assist in painting.

Kitchen Assistant
This position assists with food preparation and cooking, as well as serving meals and cleaning up. Shifts available daily. 

Mailroom Assistant
Mail Room Assistants are usually on on-call status because mailing times vary from month to month. Here you will help us stuff and stamp envelopes in preparation for the mailings we send out. Availability varies, but typical shifts are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Maintenance Worker
Be an on-call volunteer or offer your services for one-time. Our needs range from hanging drywall to laying carpet to repairing kitchen appliances and more. This position requires previous experience. Availability varies.

Prayer Ministry
Spend half hour, one hour or several hours at the Mission praying over our shelter, guests, staff and a list of provided prayer needs. Availability varies. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator to schedule a meeting with our Executive Director and Director of Church Ministry.

Receptionist
As a volunteer receptionist, you will come in once or twice to train on the phones and front desk, and either be on an on-call status or set up a weekly/monthly schedule to work evenings or weekends. For those volunteers with on-call status, we might call as infrequently as once a month or as often as once a week. Whether you come in completely depends on your availability. Experience with a multi-line phone system preferred. Availability varies.

Warehouse Assistant
This opportunity has also been known as "clothing sorter". We have expanded the position to include loading and unloading donations, as well as sorting through them and putting them on display. The Distribution Center is open for volunteers Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 -6:00 pm.

Group Volunteer Opportunities
Get your church, workplace, school organization, association or family involved! All volunteers must fill out our Group Volunteer Application and mail, fax or email it to our Volunteer Coordinator before they begin their experience. See you at the Mission!

Meal Servers
For a group of 8 volunteers or less, this is an opportunity to really serve the homeless people who live at the Mission by serving them a meal, washing their dishes, or cleaning the food prep area. Available every day from 10:00 am -1:00 pm and 4:00 pm -7:00 pm.

Painters
For a group of 10 volunteers or less, this project includes taping and other prep work, as well as painting trim and walls, plus clean-up afterwards. Help revamp our interior! Availability varies.

Donations Sorters
For a group of 25 volunteers or less, this is an opportunity to make clothing and household items available to the impoverished and needy by sorting and displaying them. Available Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Mailing Stuffers
For a group of 2-20 volunteers, this is a fun group project to work on together. You will be stamping and stuffing envelopes. Shift availability varies.

Club E.D.E.F.Y. Party Planners
For a group of 6-15 volunteers, this is an opportunity to plan a party for the kids in Club E.D.E.F.Y., our after school-care program, for children ranging from ages 5-17 years old. Put on a puppet show, coordinate crafts, organize games, provide snacks and more. Available Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

Construction Workers
For a group of 2-4 volunteers, this is an opportunity to hang drywall, lay carpet and more. Construction or maintenance experience within the group preferred. Availability varies.

Drivers
For a group of 2-3 responsible volunteers, this opportunity requires at least one person be able to drive a large truck. All volunteers should be able to engage in physical labor. Available during business hours.

Special Events
During special events, we need anywhere from 2 to 500 volunteers (depending on the event). See Seasonal Projects for a list of opportunities and then contact our Volunteer Coordinator to learn more.

Seasonal Projects
These projects are especially great for groups, including church groups, bible-studies, workplaces, school organizations, associations or a group of friends and family. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator for dates, times and number of volunteers needed for these special projects.
